Marije van Rijn is a musician and social-cultural entrepreneur. In her own work she combines pop, jazz, folk and classical music into multicolored songs. In addition, she brings hidden stories to life through art and music to shed light on social and societal issues.
After completing her classical piano studies at Codarts in 2011, Marije began her musical career as a songwriter, pianist, and singer in her band Scarlet Mae. With the band, she released two albums and performed at venues such as Paradiso, Eurosonic/Noorderslag, Appelpop, and the Great Escape Festival (UK). In 2023, Marije released her new solo EP, 'Petrichord.' nieuwe solo EP uit, ‘Petrichord’.
In 2021, she graduated with honors from the master's program in New Audiences and Innovative Practices at the Royal Conservatory. Shortly thereafter, she founded the collective The Transformers The Transformers, in which professional musicians collaborate with people who have experience with homelessness. Together, they bring hidden stories from the city to life in new music that they perform on stages and at festivals. Marije organized collaborations between several professional music venues and festivals, aid organizations such as the Pauluskerk, Ontmoeting, and mental health organizations such as Antes and Pameijer.
In addition, she works as a musical director and workshop leader on social art projects with the Metropole Orchestra, Theater Amare, North Sea Round Town, and TivoliVredenburg. She's a guest lecturer at conservatories (Koncon, Fontys) in creative group processes and social art. She is also a board member of the Drumworks Nederland foundation and is affiliated with the Batavierhuis in Rotterdam as a Batavier.
